Social justice dance
Learning Goal: To use the elements of dance and choreographic forms to communicate a theme or mood.
What kinds of social justice issues are you familiar with?
ex. racism, children's rights, war and violence...
How do you tell a story without words?
How can you convey a message with movement?
In groups of 4, you will create a dance to draw attention to a social justice issue. You will have to incorporate the elements of dance.
While watching the videos, deconstruct the dance and identify the various elements of dance.

In groups of 4, you will create a dance to draw attention to a social justice issue. You will have to incorporate the elements of dance.
- Body: body awareness, use of body parts, body shapes, locomotor and non-locomotor movements, body bases, symmetry versus asymmetry, geometric versus organic shape, angular versus curved shape, isolation of body parts (e.g. moving just the shoulder when the rest of the body is still), weight transfer
- Space: levels, pathways, directions, positive versus negative space, proximity of dancers to one another, various group formations, performance space (e.g., confined, large)
- Time: pause, freeze, with music, without music, duration, rhythm, tempo, acceleration/deceleration
- Energy: effort, force, quality, inaction versus action, percussion, fluidity (e.g., wring, dab, mould, flow, bind)
- Relationship: dancers to object, opposition, groupings (e.g., large and small groups), meet/part, follow/lead, emotional connections between dancers, groupings
While watching the videos, deconstruct the dance and identify the various elements of dance.

Your dance must incorporate:
- music that creates a mood
- a message to be relayed
- each of the 5 dance elements
- equal contribution by each group member
There will be an individual written component as well as a peer assessment. You will:
- describe your social justice issue
- describe how your dance moves communicate the message
